1. Food
"You are what you eat." Nutrition experts often use this saying to promote better eating habits. What we put in our mouths does become a part of us. But we can look at this statement another way. What we eat reflects who we are--as people and as a culture. Do you want to understand another culture? Then you ought to find out about its food. Learning about American food can gie us a real taste of American culture.
What is "American food"? At first you might think the answer is easy as pie. To many people, American food means hamburgers, hot dogs, fried chicken and pizza. If you hae a "sweet tooth," you might een think of apple pie or chocolate chip cookies. It's true that Americans do eat those things. But are those the only kind of ittles you can find in America?
Except for Thanksgiing turkey, it's hard to find a typically "American" food. The United States is a land of immigrants. So Americans eat food from many different countries. When people moe to America, they bring their cooking styles with them. That's why you can find almost eery kind of ethnic food in America. In some cases, Americans hae adopted foods from other countries as faorites. Americans loe Italian pizza, Mexican tacos and Chinese egg rolls. But the American ersion doesn't taste quite like the original!
As with any large country, the U.S.A has seeral distinct regions. Each region boasts its own special style of food. isit the South and enjoy country-style cooking. Journey through Louisiana for some spicy Cajun cuisine. Take a trip to New England and sample saory seafood dishes. Trael through the Midwest, "the breadbasket of the nation," for delicious baked goods. Cruise oer to the Southwest and try some tasty Tex-Mex treats. Finish your food tour in the Pacific Northwest with some gourmet coffee.
Americans liing at a fast pace often just "grab a quick bite." Fast food restaurants offer people on the run eerything from fried chicken to fried rice. Microwae dinners and instant foods make cooking at home a snap. Of course, one of the most common quick American meals is a sandwich. If it can fit between two slices of bread, Americans probably make a sandwich out of it. Peanut butter and jelly is an all-time American faorite.
Americans on the go also tend to eat a lot of "junk food." Potato chips, candy bars, soft drinks and other goodies are popular treats. Many people eat too many of these unhealthy snacks. But others opt for more healthy eating habits. Some een go "all natural." They refuse to eat any food prepared with chemicals or addities.
American culture is a good illustration of the saying "you are what you eat." Americans represent a wide range of backgrounds and ways of thinking. The ariety of foods enjoyed in the U.S. reflects the diersity of personal tastes. The food may be international or regional. Sometimes it's fast, and sometimes it's not so fast. It might be junk food, or maybe it's natural food. In any case, the style is all-American.
2. Cooking
At a local supermarket, two women push half-filled grocery carts. The ladies are good friends, but they couldn't be more different. One is a stay-at-home housewife who loes to create culinary masterpieces from scratch. The other is a training superisor at a prestigious adertising agency. Household chores, particularly those in the kitchen, are not her idea of fun. The two ladies stop for a moment in the frozen foods section. "I'm so tired," sighs the professional woman. "I don't know what to do about supper." Her friend suggests, "What about a microwae dinner?" The weary professional sighs, "No, I don't feel like cooking tonight."
If you think American cooking means opening a package and tossing the contents into the microwae, think again. On the one hand, it's true that Americans thrie on cold cereal for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch and instant dinners. From busy homemakers to professional people, many Americans enjoy the conenience of prepackaged meals that can be ready to sere in 10 minutes or less. On the other hand, many Americans recognize the alue of cooking skills. Parents-especially mothers-see the importance of training their children-especially daughters-in the culinary arts. Most Americans will admit that there's nothing better than a good home-cooked meal. But with cooking, as with any other skill, good results don't happen by accident.
Probably eery cook has his or her own cooking style. But there are some basic techniques and principles that most people follow. For example, baking is a primary method of preparing food in America. The dinner menu often has casseroles, roast meats and other baked goods. For that reason, Americans would find it next to impossible to lie without an oen. American cooks gie special attention to the balance of foods, too. In planning a big meal they try to include a meat, a few egetables, some bread or pasta and often a dessert. They also like to make sure the meal is colorful. Haing seeral different colors of food on the plate usually makes for a healthy meal.
For those who need guidance in their cooking, or for those who hae just run out of ideas, recipes are lifesaers. Recipes list all the ingredients for a dish (generally in the order used), the amount of each to use, and a description of how to put them together. Finding recipes in America is as easy as pie. Most good cooks hae a shelf full of cookbooks ranging from locally published recipe collections to national bestsellers like the Betty Crocker Cookbook. Magazines deoted to home management, such as Good Housekeeping and Family Circle, are chock-full of scrumptious selections. Friends often augment their recipe collection by passing around their faorites written on cards.
For experienced cooks, true artists that they are, recipes are merely reference points. They often make adjustments as they go along, depending on the quantity of people they need to sere, the ingredients they hae aailable and their personal taste. Some cooks use recipes ery little, preferring instead to depend on their intuition as they add a pinch of this and a dash of that to create just the right flaors.
Of course, Americans don't hae a corner on the market when it comes to good cooking. Whereer you go in the world, people loe to eat. As a result, eery culture and nationality has its own share of mouth-watering delicacies. And America, as a "land of immigrants," has imported practically all arieties of cooking. Most good cooks in America are "fluent" in seeral cooking "dialects": Mexican, Italian, Chinese and good old American style, just to name a few. But whateer the dialect, cooking is a language eeryone understands.
3. Home
Home. Few words in the English language hae such a special meaning. Home is a place where you can relax, kick back and just be yourself. Just about eeryone has a strong opinion of what makes a house a home. And for most people in America, home should be, aboe all, comfortable.
Americans like their homes to reflect their personal tastes. Many do-it-yourselfers enjoy fixing up their house and making it more "liable." They often try to create a cozy atmosphere so that when they're at home, they'll really feel "at home." Sofas and lounge chairs may be heaily padded and arranged in groupings conducie to relaxed conersation. The bathroom een receies special attention. Carpeted floors, scented soaps, colorful wallpaper and decoratie curtains adorn the "comfort room" in many homes. And on aerage, Americans hae more bathrooms than any other people in the world.
Lisa Marie Odegard, an interior designer in Bozeman, Montana, comments that "a home is a haen. People want an open, easy feeling to make their homes comfortable." For that reason, many new homes now hae big, open kitchens and aulted ceilings.
Americans try to make the most of their space, too. The majority of homes hae built-in closets and sheles, and people spare no pains to add dressers, filing cabinets and closet organizers to maximize their storage space. Although keeping the house neat is often a constant battle, Americans feel it's a battle worth fighting.
People in America keep an eye on the latest trends in interior design. In the 80s, the "country" look dominated the home decorating scene. Rustic furniture and sheles full of old-fashioned knick-knacks created a homey atmosphere reminiscent of rural America seeral generations back. The 90s hae brought in another longing for the past: the retro 50s and 60s look--plain and simple furniture with square backs and arms and block-style legs.
Some parts of the country hae their own regional preferences. In the western United States, homeowners faor the Naajo Indian style of the Southwest or the cowboy look. In contrast, Easterners prefer French Country or more "fussy" styles.
With all this attention to their homes, you would think Americans place a high premium on housekeeping. In fact, howeer, keeping house doesn't receie as much attention as it used to. Why? The fast-paced lifestyles of the 90s allow little spare time for dusting, acuuming and scrubbing the tub. Ironically, howeer, een though more and more women work outside the home, women still do twice as much house work as men. Modern cone-niences like the washing machine, the acuum cleaner, and the dishwasher hae taken some of the drudgery out of household chores. But in general, Americans these days take their cue from books like How to Aoid Housework.
As a result, you might think American homes of the 90s are less than spotless. Witness the fact that sales of household cleaning products hae declined in recent years. Besides that, Americans seem to be less persnickety about their housecleaning--especially in areas that nobody sees. acuum under the sofa? Dust the baseboards? Are you kidding? Ironically, though, American women seem quite satisfied with their housekeeping, according to a national surey conducted in 1995-96. Besides that, people are designing their homes with low-maintenance features--tile in bathrooms and kitchens as well as marble on countertops--to cut down on the need for frequent cleaning. Een so, more and more people are hiring outside help to clean their houses. A Roper poll found that one in six Americans hired cleaning help last year, up from one in 10 in 1986. One professional housecleaning serice, Merry Maids, has grown to oer 800 franchises in recent years.
In a pre-Reolutionary War speech in 1761, James Otis made the famous remark that "a man's home is his castle." Americans like their castle to be as comfortable as possible. They would like to hae a home they can be proud of, a place they can call their own. Not eeryone's home looks like a castle, but "be it eer so humble, there's no place like home."
4. Pets
Americans loe pets. And it's not just puppy loe, either. Many pet owners treat their furry friends as part of the family. Sometimes they spice up their pets' lies with entertaining ideos and amusing toys. If they hae an eye for fashion, pet owners can dress their pets in stylish clothes. For special occasions, they can use canine perfume to make their dogs smell, well, less beastly. You might say Americans treat their pets like they treat their children-sometimes een better.
In America, there are more households with pets than those with children. At least 43 percent of U.S. homes hae pets of some sort. Exotic creatures, such as monkeys, snakes and een woles, find a home with some Americans. More common pets include tropical fish, mice and birds. But the all-time faorites are cats and dogs, een at the White House. The Clintons' cat, Socks, has replaced the Bushes' dog, Millie, as reigning First Pet. Americans sometimes hae strong feelings about whether dogs or cats make better pets. "Dog people" and "cat people" often enjoy friendly rialries.
Leading a dog's life in America isn't such a bad thing. Many grocery stores sell gourmet pet foods to owners eager to please their pets. In Houston, Texas, dogs can hae their dinner deliered to their homes, just like pizza. Well-to-do canines can attend doggy daycare centers while their owners work. Pets can een accompany their owners on acation. Fancy hotels are beginning to accommodate both man and beast. Furry guests at Four Seasons Hotels can enjoy gourmet meals sered on fine china and sleep in soft beds.
Beneath the fluffy luxuries, there lies a basic American belief: Pets hae a right to be treated well. At least 75 animal welfare organizations exist in America. These proide care and adoption serices for homeless and abused animals. eterinarians can gie animals an incredible leel of medical careNfor an incredible price. To pay for the high-tech health care, people can buy health insurance for their pets. And when it's time to say good-bye, owners can bury their pets in a respectable pet cemetery.
The aerage American enjoys haing pets around, and for good reason. Researchers hae discoered that interacting with animals lowers a person's blood pressure. Dogs can offer protection from burglars and unwelcome isitors. Cats can help rid the home of unwanted pests. Little creatures of all shapes and sizes can proide companionship and loe. In many cases, haing a pet prepares a young couple for the responsibilities of parenthood. Pets een encourage social relationships: They gie their owners an appearance of friendliness, and they proide a good topic of conersation.
Pets are as basic to American culture as hot dogs or apple pie. To Americans, pets are not just property, but a part of the family. After all, pets are people, too.
American Houses
5. American Houses
American houses usually hae priate kitchens, a liing room and sometimes separate areas for eating and watching teleision. A house usually has its own mailbox, a yard with plants or perhaps a lawn, and a place to store garbage out of sight.
A bungalow is a small house with one or two bedrooms and usually one bathroom.
A mansion is a real big house with many bedrooms and seeral bathrooms.

A town house is a two-floor apartment. The kitchen, liing room and dining room are usually on the first floor and the bedrooms are on the second floor.
A studio apartment may hae a separate kitchen, but the liing room is also the bedroom!
A condominium, or "condo" for short, is an apartment that is owned by the occupant, not the building owners.
Most American are happy to talk about their homes. And if they'e done anything special in their home, they'll let you know what it was, and maybe tell you what it cost to put in the Jacuzzi, deck or patio, etc. Most Americans lie in cities, but nearly as many lie in suburbs. Suburban American has shopping centers called malls and residents usually need a care to get around. Most of the houses in the suburbs are one or two stories tall, with priate yards and gardens and garage. There are few tall buildings in the suburbs. Cities hae neighborhoods, "warehouse" stores, and public transportation (bused, trains and taxis) is usually pretty good. Priate houses might only hae a back yard, and if there is a garage it probably is small. Cities hae a lot of apartment buildings and some tall buildings may seem to "scrape the sky", so they are called "skyscraper".

Arise, ye who refuse to be slaes!
With our flesh and blood, let us build our new Great Wall!
The Chinese nation faces its greatest danger.
From each one the urgent call for action comes forth.
Arise! Arise! Arise!
Millions with but one heart,
Braing the enemy's fire.
March on!
Braing the enemy's fire.
March on! March on! March on!
  An Ingenious Loe Letter
There once lied a lad who was deeply in loe with a girl, but disliked by the girl’s father, who didn’t want to see any further deelopment of their loe. The lad was eager to write to the girl, yet he was quite sure that the father would read it first. So he wrote such a letter to the girl:
My loe for you I once expressed
no longer lasts, instead, my distaste for you
is growing with each passing day. Next time I see you,
I een won’t like that look yours.
  I’ll do nothing but
look away from you. You can neer expect I’ll
marry you. The last chat we had
was so dull and dry that you shouldn’t think it
made me eager to see you again.
If we get married, I firmly beliee I’ll
lie a hard life, I can neer
lie happily with you, I’ll deote myself
  but not
to you. No one else is more
  harsh and selfish and least
  solicitous and considerate than you.
I sincerely want to let you know
what I said is true. Please do me a faor by
ending our relations and refrain from
writing me a reply. Your letter is always full of
things which displease me. You hae no
sincere care for me. So long! Please beliee
I don’t loe you any longer. Don’t think
I still hae a loe of you!
Haing read the letter, the father felt relieed and gae it to his daughter with a light heart.
The girl also felt quite pleased after she read it carefully, her lad still had a deep loe for her.
Do you know why? In fact, she felt ery sad when she read the letter for the first time. But she read it for a few more times and , at last, she found the key – only eery other line should be read, that is the first line, the third, the fifth … and so on to the end.
